When planning a new deck, one of the first decisions you’ll face is: wood or composite? Both materials have their pros and cons, especially in climates like we experience here in the Hopkinton area.
Pressure-treated wood is a classic choice. It’s affordable, easy to source, and has that timeless natural look. With proper sealing and maintenance, it can last for years. However, it does require regular upkeep — staining, sealing, and occasional board replacements.
Composite decking (like Trex or TimberTech) offers a modern, low-maintenance alternative. Made from a mix of wood fibers and plastic, it resists moisture, rot, insects, and fading. That makes it ideal for homeowners who want the look of wood without the constant upkeep.
While composite typically costs more upfront, the long-term savings in maintenance (no sealing, staining, or rot repairs) can make up for it over time.
Here in New England, where weather swings are common, many Hopkinton homeowners choose composite for its durability. But if you love the look and feel of real wood — and don’t mind the care — pressure-treated or cedar decking may still be the right fit.
At JBOSiding, we install both and walk you through the decision based on your lifestyle, budget, and goals.
We had a great experience with JBO Siding. In couple of days, the JBO crew got our siding done with no problems. Good price and quality! We definitely recommend their services. Thank you!
Jardel did amazing work for us! He took off the old cedar clapboard and house wrap on the back of Cape Ann Style home which is two and three stories high given that our house is built on a slope. New house wrap and cedar clapboard was installed. He also replaced our walkout basement door, frame and hardware. At the end of each day, everything was completely cleaned up. Jardel demonstrated sincere interest in the work we wanted him to do. He was punctual, very much a gentleman, trustworthy, and a consummate professional. I will have him back to do more work for us whenever it is needed.
The guys did such a great job... Always on time, there when they said they would be, reasonably priced and very easy to work with. We add a couple of extras and they were able to accommodate the requests. We will absolutely use JBO again!
Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my experience with JBO Siding. From start to finish, they demonstrated a commitment to excellence, and I would highly recommend them to anyone in need of siding services. 10/10
Jardel resided the back of our house. We were so satisfied with the work he did. House came out fantastic. They cleaned up after the job like nobody had ever been there. I highly recommend them
Jardel and his crew went above and beyond on our first flipping project. The siding/finishing was installed beautifully. They were always on time, professional, fair price and the most important for us, they made sure the site was clean after every day of work. They will definitely be part of our next flipping team. Did I mentioned we loved the result? See for yourself on these before and after pictures. 🙂
For a standard-size deck (10x12 or 12x16), the average build time is 3–5 business days from start to finish — weather permitting. Larger or more complex designs with multiple levels, custom railings, or integrated lighting can take up to 1–2 weeks. We always provide a clear timeline during the quote process and stick to it as closely as possible.
Yes. In most Massachusetts towns, including Marlborough, a permit is required for any deck over 30 inches off the ground or attached to your home. Don’t worry — JBOSiding handles all permit applications and inspections on your behalf to ensure compliance with local building codes.
Composite decking is your best bet if you want minimal upkeep. Brands like Trex and TimberTech resist fading, mold, rot, and splintering. Unlike wood, you won’t need to seal or stain it annually. It’s a smart choice for homeowners who want year-round curb appeal without the hassle.
Deck pricing depends on size, materials, design complexity, and site conditions. On average:
Pressure-treated wood decks: $25–$35 per square foot
Composite decks: $45–$65+ per square foot
We provide free quotes with a detailed breakdown of all labor, materials, and timeline expectations — no hidden costs.
Yes, absolutely. Our team specializes in building elevated and multi-tiered decks for sloped or uneven terrain. We use proper footings, framing, and supports to ensure stability and drainage. If your backyard isn’t perfectly flat, we’ll design a solution that’s both safe and stunning.
